Pilot Refresher Course - R44 (Part 141)

The Pilot Refresher Course (PRC) is a uniquely thorough training course that goes far beyond a typical flight review or make/model recurrent training. This fast-paced comprehensive short course is packed with 6 hours of ground, 6 hours of flight and 6.5 hours of pre-flight/de-brief. The PRC is fully integrated into Epic’s electronic training records management system, which is accessible to you during the course.

Insurance Approved

The PRC is a Part 141 course that is approved by insurance underwriters for private aircraft owners needing to meet the recurrent training requirements of their insurance policies.

Graduation Achievements

Upon graduation from the PRC, you will have attained the following:

  • Fight Review logbook endorsement [14 CFR Part 61.56(a)]
  • Daytime passenger-carrying currency for Rotorcraft-Helicopter [14 CFR Part 61.57(a)]
  • Night time passenger-carrying currency for Rotorcraft-Helicopter [14 CFR Part 61.57(b)]
  • Cross country and night time (important for meeting future employment minimums)
  • R44 Flight Review logbook endorsement [14 CFR Part 61, SFAR 73 2(c)(2)]
  • R44 day and night passenger-carrying currency [14 CFR Part 61, SFAR 73 2(d)]
  • Graduation certificate from Epic’s Part 141 Flight Training Academy

Ground Training Content

The PRC includes 6 hours of comprehensive ground training, designed to give you a solid understanding of operating legally within the ever-changing FAA regulatory framework. This is more important now than ever as FAA enforcement actions have sharply increased against pilots, most who didn’t know the recent rule changes. Ground training will increase your awareness of how to avoid FAA enforcement action. A summary listing of ground training content follows:

  • Federal Aviation Regulations
    • Review of regulations and recent rules changes to Parts 61 and 91
    • In-depth airworthiness regulations (weak area among pilots/owners)
    • SFAR 73 (R22/R44) simplified – are you legal?
    • Recent regulatory/procedural changes – is the “status quo” still legal?
    • Avoiding common regulatory traps
  • Aircraft systems and aerodynamics
    • In-depth systems descriptions (make/model specific)
    • Aircraft performance and limitations using scenario-based training methods
    • Recent Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins and recommendations
    • Aerodynamics & hazardous flight conditions
  • Airspace, airports, and weather
    • Emphasis on Temporary Flight Restrictions, avoiding traps and FAA enforcement action against you
    • Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), their importance and avoiding common traps
    • Runway safety and incursion avoidance (including new nationwide radio phraseology, airport operational procedures, and taxiway markings, etc)
    • Noise abatement procedures and flying neighborly industry practices
    • Hazardous weather avoidance and weather planning
  • Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)
    • Accident case study relevant to your operational flight profile
    • Development of a Personal Minimums Checklist
    • Personal risk analysis

Flight Training Content

  • Focus is placed on the FAA’s Special Emphasis Areas of the Practical Test Standards (PTS) at the certificate level held by the Trainee
  • Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM) overview and skill development
  • Completion standards start broad and gradually tighten to PTS standards for the level of pilot certificate held
  • Basic through advanced maneuvers covering every task required for the initial issuance of the Trainee’s pilot certificate level (Rotorcraft-Helicopter)
  • Cross-country flight time (good for categorical time building) and overview of cross country flight planning, weather, services available to airmen, etc
  • Night flight (elective flight lesson – satisfies night passenger-carrying currency and good for categorical time building)

Registration Information & Class Schedules

The PRC is taught during one of the group classes listed below or one-on-one with prior coordination.

The PRC classes do not require attendance every day for the whole day. Outside of mandatory evening group class times, flight training can be scheduled convenient to you.
